“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
To fill one's soul is to be engulfed in the service of others and in doing so, real change will occur; change that transforms the lives of others and the community we live in. As a Teacherpreneur, an innovative classroom teacher that takes risk, promotes student voice, and has developed an entrepreneurial leadership style that goes beyond the walls of school, I have a moral obligation to not only develop as a 'Highly Effective' teacher in the classroom, but to seek opportunities to improve my building, district, and community. These are a sampling of my vision for the future, past projects, and present passions in which I seek to lead and collaborate with others to improve my little corner of the world. As a Teacherpreneur, I must seek ways to empower my students AND become a visionary leader in my profession to seek solutions to improve my educational community and beyond.
The most rewarding Student-Driven, Service-Learning, and Community Based project that I've been apart throughout my entire educational career; Honoring our American Veterans!
“You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” Past projects/courses that I have created and/or collaborated in which impacted my community and school.
Before STEM was impacting the nation as it is today, at MCC Middle School we created a opportunity for students to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math with an engaging & hands-on approach call MOD LAB that integrated Robotics, Aerodynamics & much more in 2004. It was up to me to design, organize, and carry out the success of this unique course.
I served on the Board of Directors and worked as the official Videographer for the first five years at the Mason County Sports Hall of Fame. Being apart of something as special as this was inspiring because of the quality of people involved and their true passion for making Mason County great!
When friend and colleague, Scott Dumas, was struck by a car in 2014 Mason County Central Middle School answer the call! Collaborating and guiding the students, staff and community to raise awareness and money for the family of this tragic accident was inspiring (TV Video). The Dumas Strong campaign ignited a movement of empowering for our students and community to not only raise funds for the family, but to model for students and community the importance of collaboration..
The Mason County Traveling Wall Project electrified our community in honoring our forgotten veterans of the Vietnam Era. This project was an amazing collaboration of a dedicated team of community members who were committed to educate and honor all our American Veterans. I was proud to co-chair and create the website of this event that was instrumental in bringing over 20,000 individuals over the Labor Day weekend in 2014 in which honored our heroes.
During the summer of 2014, as a videographer, I had the pleasure volunteering my time to assist Dr. Bill Anderson in creating 17 video projects that complemented the Mason County Cultural Trails throughout Mason County. These videos highlighted Mason County's rich current and historical culture that blended smart phone technology with our rich historical heritage. Tourist today can travel our beautiful county and learn about our unique culture and history.
This course was created by myself to fit a need in the teaching of digital citizenship for our 8th grade students at MCC Middle School. A seven week course was designed to expose the students to the importance of being a responsible digital citizen. Students also engaged in the latest applications and tools that foster positive citizenship (Twitter, coding, proper research, Google Apps, and much more!)
Numerous times throughout the course of the school year, I will engage students in a series of questions that either inspire their thinking or reflect on their learning. I have documented their responses over the years . . .
"The road to success is always under construction." Current projects that are being developed in which will impact both my community and school.
Presently, along with a couple of colleagues, we are creating a dialogue with MCC Leadership and Board Members on how we as a TEAM can assist in making MCC School District more marketable, visible, and a greater school. Our vision for the future, a list of ideas that could make us great, and present practices are outlined in this presentation (Click on image to view).
THE WONDERS OF MOONSHOT THINKING is a course/project that I have created not only for a seven week class, but to be a model of how students and staff can foster an environment of innovation, creativity, STEM, and student voice. This 'test' course is presently being implemented in which empowers students to think differently as they look into their future.
Your Passport to the World is presently the platform for my blended Learning classroom. A variety of resources for teacher and students have been created, but more importantly, my daily Learning Targets (Syllabus) are posted along with daily resources for students to expand their learning experience. This has been a platform within my learning environment for the past 8 years and is a 'project' to enhances communication with students and parents.
MCC Middle School's HOST initiative is the brain child of a 7th grade student that I had this year. In an attempt to create a better environment for new incoming students, she wanted students to take charge and ownership in acting as mentors for these newly enrolled students. As an Teacherpreneur, my role was to get out of her way and allow her to thrive with this project that will launch next school year!
RELEASING THE WARRIOR WITHIN was developed and a collaborated on a document/website as a need for our students to take lead of their learning and life. This comprehensive inspirational plan of action is being developed to show the importance of each and every students to create a pocket of greatness within their own lives. I seek to launch this concept soon as a building wide program/project.
A workable document that I use as resource for technology 'coaching' and innovative ideas to inspire engagement and meaningful tools for students and staff. It is a reflection of my annual attendance of the MACUL conference in which 4000-5000 educators from all over the state attend.
An Education For Our Time Academy was inspired by a book of the same title and from a trip to a Project-Based School in Henderson, MN. This is a collection of resources, ideas, inspiration of creating a academy within the public school system. The premise of the vision was for a group of four encore opportunities for the middle school students at MCC Middle School.
The MCC Middle School Veterans Day Program has been recognized by the Governor of the State of Michigan, inspired students to act and serve our veterans, educated our community, collaborated with numerous business/organizations throughout the surrounding counties, and has honored over 75-85 local veterans every year for over a decade. It has grown to be the marque event of the year for our district and community.
Your Passport to the World: An Inquiry Based Social Studies Experience
An introductory video of my 7th grade social studies experience of the Eastern Hemisphere (My Social Studies Class). The premise of the course is to take the students on a journey through our past and the world today. Along the way we will inquire and seek solutions to issues/problems of historical significance and present time as I integrate all subject areas throughout this course.
